What Is a Newborn Care Specialist (NCS)?

A Newborn Care Specialist (NCS), commonly known as a baby night nurse, is a trained professional who specializes in the care of newborns during the first few weeks or months of life. Unlike a traditional nanny or babysitter, an NCS focuses exclusively on supporting newborns and their parents during the critical postpartum period.

NCS professionals are experts in:
-
Establishing healthy sleep habits
-
Feeding support (breast, bottle, or both)
-
Umbilical cord and circumcision care
-
Creating routines for baby and family
-
Soothing techniques and sleep conditioning
-
Recognizing signs of reflux, colic, or feeding issues
-
Supporting parents with education and confidence-building

Most families hire an NCS for overnight care, allowing parents to rest and recover while their baby is in capable, nurturing hands. Others may request daytime or 24-hour care based on their needs.

Many NCS professionals, like those placed through L&S Newborn Care and Beyond, are certified in CPR and First Aid, newborn sleep training, lactation education, and newborn development. They are also experienced in working with preemies, multiples, and high-needs infants.

In short, a Newborn Care Specialist provides more than just help—they offer rest, reassurance, and expert support during one of the most tender and transformative times in a family’s life.
